Zutong High-speed Imaging Achievement Award

This award will be presented at the upcoming 33rd International Conference on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics (ICHSlP-33) to individuals, whose work has made the most significant contributions to high-speed imaging, primarily in the areas of research, technological innovation, or practical applications. For detailed information about the conference, please visit: https://www.ichsip-33.com

AWARD DETAILS

• The award includes a certificate, a golden medal, and an honorarium of USD 10,000 (or CNY 70,000), granted by the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, the main sponsor of ICHSlP-33.

• The nominations will be adjudicated by an International Selection Committee comprised of recognized experts in the field of high-speed imaging and photonics.

• The International Selection Committee will give preference to nominations describing contributions made by an individual. The nominee(s)’ contributions must have led to significant advancements in technologies closely linked to high-speed imaging or ultrafast science and technology commonly associated with high-speed imaging. However, acknowledging that new ideas often involve entirely new concepts, the Selection Committee will also consider contributions that seek to steer the field in innovative directions.

• The recognized contribution should be innovative and completed within the past five years.

NOMINATION INSTRUCTIONS

Nominations must comprehensively encompass the following information:

• Identifying Details: Full name, institutional affiliation, and current contact information for both the nominee and the nominator.

• Relationship Declaration: A clear statement of the relationship between the nominee and nominator. Nominators are required to disclose any personal or professional connections that could potentially be construed as a conflict of interest. While self-nominations are accepted, they are strongly discouraged.

• Contribution Narrative: A detailed, in-depth description of the nominee’s contributions, highlighting their significance and impact.

• Technical Achievements: A focused account of the nominee's technical accomplishments relevant to the award, demonstrating how they have advanced the field.

• Supporting Documentation: Supplementary materials that enhance the Selection Committee’s ability to evaluate the nomination. This may include but is not limited to: the nominee’s curriculum vitae; a list of relevant publications; copies of key research papers, reports, or presentations that detail the nominated work; and documentation of previous awards or recognitions received by the nominee for comparable contributions.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS

All nominations must be RECEIVED by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on September 01, 2025. This deadline is firm and will not be extended. Submissions received after this deadline will not be considered.

A brief biography of Mr. Zutong Gong

Zutong Gong (1904–1986) was a Chinese optical physicist, a founder of China’s optical glass industry, and the Founding Director of the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was elected as a CAS academician in 1980.

Gong obtained his bachelor degree in 1930 at Tsinghua University. He went to Germany to study at the Technische Hochschule Berlin (now Technische Universität Berlin) during 1934-1937. In 1938, Gong returned and began the construction of China’s first optical factory, the Kunming Optical Instrument Factory, serving as the director. The factory produced China’s first binocular telescopes, a landmark for the nation’s optical industry.

In 1962, Gong founded the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, serving as the director. The institute successfully developed a series of high-speed cameras, involving rotating mirror cameras, Kerr-cell cameras, image converter tube based framing cameras and streak cameras, with the temporal resolutions spanning microseconds, nanoseconds, and picoseconds. These breakthroughs established China a leading position in the field of high-speed photography. For these achievements, Gong was honored with the Photo Sonics Award in 1981, becoming the first Asian recipient since the award’s establishment in 1960.

Gong also pioneered a number of China’s first optics, including optical fiber, infrared night vision devices, the East Asia’s then-largest astronomical telescope, etc.. Throughout his career, he nurtured a mass of China new-generation optical scientists.
